Gospel Passages for the Historic 1-Year Lectionary
with page references to M.F. Toal, Sermons of the Great Fathers
For the 1-year, historic BCP lectionary, Sunday Sermons of the Great Fathers (4 vol.): A Manual of Preaching, Spiritual Reading, and Meditation is an excellent resource. It follows the Pre-Vatican II Calendar, which generally matches in Gospel Passages the 1662/1928 Book of Common Prayer. Below is a reference for finding particular passages in the set, as well as a useful Gospel scripture index for the Western Lectionary. A similar, simpler index is printed in the 1996 Preservation Press1 edition, but not present in the 1964 Edition:
[Sunday Sermons of the Great Fathers] contains the Gospel reading for each Sunday and Feast Day, and parallel Gospel texts, along with several sermons for each Gospel from both early Eastern and Western Fathers of the church, including Ambrose, John Chrysostom, Cyril of Alexandria, Leo the Great, Ephraem, Augustine and more. Also, each sermon is followed by the Catena Aurea (Golden Chain) of St. Thomas Aquinas. There is no better way to enter the mind of the early Church Fathers and the spirit of Sacred Scripture than this series. Keyed to old liturgical calendar.
